Dance in Higher Education

Dance education was a part of comprehensive schools in the U.S. from the beginning of the twentieth century. Both physical education and aesthetic education embraced dance as a part of the curriculum. In higher education, creative movement became a course of study for prospective teachers of physical education from 1926 on. As dance programs at the university level became aligned with and part of fine and performing arts colleges, the field of dance education expanded to include creative and artistic processes and a separate pedagogy for dance began to evolve.
