The National Dance Education Organization (NDEO) is a membership-driven organization. Members have a strong voice in its work and governance. NDEO's Board of Directors is a working board and requires expertise in specific roles that are integral to NDEO leadership, infrastructure, and long-term stability. The NDEO governance consists of Board of Directors, an Advisory Council, and a dedicated staff.
NDEO is guided by two distinct leadership bodies, each contributing a different kind of expertise to the organization's work.
Board of Directors: The Board of Directors holds fiduciary and policy authority for NDEO. Board members are elected by the membership and are responsible for the organization's strategic direction, financial stewardship, and accountability to the field. The Board sets policy, approves budgets, and ensures the organization remains true to its mission. The Board of Directors consists of the President, Secretary, Treasurer, and either the President Elect or Past President, 7 regional Board Directors, who all have voting rights. The Executive Director serves an ex officio role on the Board.
Advisory Council: The Advisory Council brings the field's professional expertise directly into the organization's work. Established by the Board and working in coordination with the Executive Director, the Council operates through standing committees whose scope is shaped by organizational priorities set at the policy level. Council members translate those priorities into action — advancing NDEO's programs, publications, and initiatives in ways that keep the organization responsive to the needs of its members.
The current Advisor roles include Advocacy, Awards, Curriculum, Standards and Assessment, Dance and Disabilities, Dance Education in Practice (DEiP), Development, Journal of Dance Education (JoDE), E-communications, National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA), Student Initiatives, and 2 student liaisons (Undergraduate and Graduate). Each Advisor works with a committee of volunteer members who assist in carrying out the duties of that position. Committee work provides additional opportunities to serve NDEO and the field while also providing training for future leaders. NDEO is for the members, by the members and of the members. Our members’ expertise and dedication invest in the future of dance education.
