Karen will help you navigate the setup, the ways to organize, the pitfalls and opportunities that Zoom offers as a platform for teaching dance, synchronously and asynchronously. We will address how to support your students in this new arena, what the benefits might be to you and to them, and we will also point out what does not work in Zoom, saving you hours of frustration.

In this webinar session, Dancemaker App for Remote Learning, the app co-creator, Barry Blumenfeld, and Ana Nery Fragoso, Director of Dance, Office of Arts and Special Projects at New York City Department of Education, offer a tutorial on how to use the Dancemaker App as both a teacher and as a student, followed by a sharing of curriculum created by Ana that utilizes the app. The Dancemaker App was created by the Dance Education Lab of the 92nd St Y to encourage dance making using the principles of Laban Movement Analysis. It can be used by any age.
Featuring Andrew Jannetti. Explore ways that you can adapt your dance class for the virtual environment using Google Classroom specifically in the Pre-K – Grade 5 environment but applicable to all, including private studios and non-profits. Andrew will share his experience and work arounds that he has put in place to be able to reach 525 elementary school students a week. Organizing materials, adapting lessons plans, pros and cons of synchronous and asynchronous classes, use of video, google slides, and assignments to deliver content and curriculum driven instruction will be discussed. Come join us and share in promising practices for online education and the dance classroom.
Featuring Chell Parkins. The Covid crisis took the dance education world by surprise. None of us imagined we would be adapting to online teaching amidst a global crisis. How do we take care of our students and ourselves and what do we need as a community and individuals moving forward? This webinar addresses psychological aspects of working within communities in crisis. Learn strategies for communicating with students and families while creating healthy boundaries. Self care will be at the core of adapting to the ever changing world around us.
Featuring Barbara Angeline and recent BFA Dance graduates from Mason Gross School of the Arts, Rutgers University: Kelly Dooley, Claudia Soga, Ariana Speight, Cara Stine, and Abby Wolski. How do student dance experiences and learning goals shift when they are moved to digital environments? Which additional skills do we need and which do we need to give to our students in order for us to successfully engage in remote dance education? Reimagine rather than replicate. This workshop will not expand philosophical debate surrounding whether or not face to face learning in studio practice is better in a studio. (Of course it is!!!) This workshop will explore the potential for what CAN be done in remote physical dance practices. Logistics without fancy software, safety considerations and ideas for online pedagogy will be explored via a participant/observer, observer/participant experience. Please wear comfortable clothes for moving. A gentle jazz class will be used as a medium for illuminating best practices in remote dance learning.
Featuring Joshua Honrado and Kristen Stevens. NYU Langone Health’s Harkness Center for Dance Injuries will define and discuss extrinsic considerations when teaching or dancing from home and how these relate to injury prevention. Topics covered will include environmental factors such as flooring, temperature, and space; footwear; and conditioning modifications. Educators, parents, and students can gain tools readily applicable to dancing at home as well as useful in preparing for post-pandemic return to the studio.

Hear from staff and teaching artists of the Alonzo King LINES Ballet as they share their experience in adapting the HeART with Lines integrated residency dance program to focus on undoing white supremacy and responding to trauma, all while transitioning to a distance learning format this Fall. The HeART with Lines program is currently serving PreK-8th grade in the San Francisco Bay area, California area.

This session will overview some of the tools and integrations available within the Canvas learning management system to create dynamic and engaging lessons for dance educators and their students.
