National Awards

NDEO recognizes the achievements of outstanding members through the annual awards program. The major awards for the organization are: Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Leadership, Outstanding Dance Educator, Outstanding Dance Education Researcher, Executive Director's Award for Service to NDEO, and President's Commendation for Excellence for Service in the Field.

Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award

The NDEO Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award honors outstanding book-length publications in dance education and recognizes authors who conduct exemplary inquiry that advances the field. In recognition of Ruth Lovell Murray (1900-1991), a pioneer in the field of dance education, the annual award honors books published in the English language during the last two calendar years. The Ruth Lovell Murray Book Award, NDEO’s inaugural book recognition honor, contributes significantly to the visibility of dance education professionals and their work, as well as the vitality of outstanding scholarship and publication excellence in dance education.

Doug Risner Prize for Emerging Dance Researchers

The Doug Risner Prize for Emerging Dance Researchers recognizes excellence in dance research for unpublished scholars. The prize honors Dr. Doug Risner, Editor Emeritus of Journal of Dance Education and his passionate commitment to dance education research. Risner has published over one hundred papers, journal articles, books, and book chapters and won the 2015 Dance Education Research Award from NDEO. The prize offers an honorarium that may be used for any NDEO services, including conference costs and OPDI courses.

Professional Development Scholarship

NDEO is pleased to offer Professional Development Scholarships to recognize excellence in the field of dance education, support students in their training, and help educators achieve their career goals through professional development.

Each recipient will receive a $600 credit in their NDEO account to be used towards NDEO Professional Development opportunities of their choosing as well as a complimentary 1-year membership with NDEO. This will allow for recipients to “mix and match” their Professional Development as opposed to past opportunities where recipients had to choose between a semester of OPDI courses or attending the National Conference.

Thom Cobb Memorial Scholarship

Thanks to the generous donations to the Thom Cobb Memorial Fund, NDEO is proud to continue the Thom Cobb Memorial Scholarship.

Every year this award goes to an individual who is a first time conference attendee and working dance education professional. Preference will be given to current NDEO members. As the 2020 and 2021 National Conferences were canceled due to the ongoing covid-19 pandemic, there was no Thom Cobb Memorial Scholar. We hope to reinstate this scholarship in 2022 for our in-person conference in Atlanta, Georgia.

Student Conference Scholarship

NDEO is proud to offer annual scholarships to highly qualified college students pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in dance or dance education to help defray the costs associated with attending. Recipients receive complimentary conference registration and a one-year complimentary NDEO membership.

NHSDA Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award

Students who have been inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) Secondary Program and are current juniors and seniors in High School are eligible for the NHSDA Artistic Merit, Leadership and Academic Achievement Award, the highest student dance award in the nation. The National Winner of the award will receive up to a $1000 monetary award/scholarship and a certificate. The 2 National Finalists will each receive a $250 monetary award/scholarship and a certificate. Honorable Mention Recipients will receive a certificate.  Applicants may be eligible for a state level award if their NDEO State Affiliate chooses to present one.
