In the midst of mandated pandemic-related changes in our class structures, audition practices, and curriculum, some college dance programs are taking advantage of this time of change to create more equitable practices for the admissions auditions in their college dance programs. The changes are designed to support BIPOC dancers and break down barriers that some of our prior gatekeeping audition practices have built, with the goal of creating a more equitable playing field. In this meeting, Dr. Elizabeth McPherson (Professor and Director of the Dance Division at Montclair State University) will briefly discuss changes her university has made to their admissions audition process, and then open the floor to an open discussion with attendees about changes they are making and considering. The goal of this meeting is to discuss meaningful, individualized change to address diversity, equity, inclusion, and access to dance in higher education while keeping in mind that programs are not identical and that auditions should reflect the culture and attributes of distinct colleges.

SIG Virtual Meetings allow you to connect with fellow dance educators to discuss the important concerns and issues of your sector of the dance field. Learn from other teachers currently working in the field and support one another through this challenging time. The SIG Virtual Meetings are conducted in zoom breakout rooms of 10-20 NDEO members. Participants can utilize the audio/video capabilities of this platform to actively participate in discussions. One-hour long session; informal; no recording or notes. Registrants will be given the opportunity to moderate a breakout room. A Zoom link will be emailed to you an hour before the meeting start time.
