Did you know that May 2, 2019 is Thank A Dance Teacher Day? This an annual event was founded by the National Dance Education Organization in 2014 to shine the spotlight on dance education and the teachers who make it possible. On the first Thursday in May every year, we encourage all dancers, former dancers, and dance parents to acknowledge a special dance teacher on social media using the hashtag #ThankADanceTeacherDay. This year, we’ve partnered with CLI Studios to help spread the word about this special event and make sure all dance teachers know how valued they are!

Here are 5 reasons why you should thank your dance teacher on May 2, 2019:

Dance teachers teach more than just steps. Research and anecdotal evidence shows that a quality dance education can have a life-changing impact on students, providing physical, social, emotional, cognitive, academic, and psychological benefits. What’s one lesson you learned from dance that benefits you in your life outside the studio?

2.) Dance teachers encourage personal empowerment. To succeed in dance - as in life - one needs to be responsible, determined, persistent, and passionate. Dance teachers help instill these qualities, and many more, in their students at every class and rehearsal. What trait has dance your dance teacher encouraged in you that will help you find success in the future?

3.) Dance teachers work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure their students’ success on stage and off. They spend long hours above and beyond their class time working on lesson plans, creating choreography, selecting music and costumes, grading and conducting evaluations, and furthering their own education so that they can bring new knowledge and skills to their students. Students and their families only see a fraction of that work. What is something your dance teacher did that went over and above your expectations?

4.) Dance teachers are motivated by love for their students. Dance education is a rewarding, but not necessarily glamorous, career. In addition to the long hours, dance teachers are often faced with a lack of resources and recognition for their work. Their pride and joy comes from their students’ success and happiness, not their own. What is one special way a dance teacher showed you that they cared for you?

5.) Dance teachers are the heart of the art form we love. At NDEO, we know that “It All Starts With A Dance Teacher!” Your favorite dancers and choreographers, productions and memorable performances, musicals and videos; all of these are only made possible because of the dance teachers that inspired, encouraged, and developed the talents of a young, passionate dancer. How did a dance teacher inspire your love for the art of dance?

We’re sure you have plenty of reasons to be thankful for your dance teachers. No matter what they are, be sure to join us for Thank A Dance Teacher Day on May 2, 2019. Share a thank you message with them on your favorite social media site, using the hashtag #ThankADanceTeacherDay. Want to learn more? Check out our Facebook event.
