Are you a dance instructor in an academic setting wanting to encourage students to have more ownership of their learning? Then some form of ungrading practice can support this!
While training to be an Intimacy Director and Coordinator, I recognized that grading was a perfect example of how power dynamics influence consent and personal agency, affecting students’ trust in me, each other, and their own creativity. I began co-grading with middle and high school students in 2018 in both technique and composition classes. In 2020, I carried these formulas over to higher education. In 2022, I went fully to contract and ungrading practices in both dance technique and lecture courses.

About the Presenter:
Nicole Perry is a Silver Palm award-winning intimacy director, as well as intimacy coordinator and dance choreographer in South Florida. Career highlights include 2 Broward County Artist Investment Grants for KINesphere (site-inspired dance works), intimacy coordination for God Forbid on Hulu, and a Carbonell nomination for the intimacy direction of To Fall in Love at Theatre Lab.
Nicole is a Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst. She holds an MFA from Goddard College. She apprenticed with Intimacy Directors International, and is certified by Intimacy Directors and Coordinators (IDC). She is a founding member of Intimacy Direction in Dance.
Nicole is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance at Florida Atlantic University. She also teaches courses on Consent and Power in Pedagogy for Momentum Stage, NDEO, LIMS and delivers workshops on these topics to various institutions around the country.
