Ungrading / Contract Grading in Dance Classes - Click Here to Register

Presented by: Nicole Perry

Are you a dance instructor in an academic setting wanting to encourage students to have more ownership of their learning? Then some form of ungrading practice can support this!

While training to be an Intimacy Director and Coordinator, I recognized that grading was a perfect example of how power dynamics influence consent and personal agency, affecting students’ trust in me, each other, and their own creativity. I began co-grading with middle and high school students in 2018 in both technique and composition classes. In 2020, I carried these formulas over to higher education. In 2022, I went fully to contract and ungrading practices in both dance technique and lecture courses.

 In this session we will:

  •  Dispel some ungrading myths like: -“Everyone gets an A!” -“The teacher doesn’t do any work now.”-“Ungrading practices are only for ‘traditional’ classes and not for dance.
  • Celebrate: -The “why” and “how” of ungrading practices for academic dance settings.
  • Discuss goal setting with students, rubrics, reflective prompts.
  • See and hear examples from students who have experienced these processes.
