National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA)
The work of NDEO impacts communities across the nation. Our innovative programs affect national initiatives, state programs, districts, institutions, and individual teachers and students. NDEO's commitment to excellence in teaching dance has launched systematic change at local, state, and national levels. We welcome your involvement. National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) - The NHSDA is available to all students studying dance in private or public middle or high schools, dance schools/academies, performing arts centers, or community centers with active dance programs serving students 11-18 years of age. Welcome to the NHSDA by Jane Bonbright, NDEO Executive Director To promote the NHSDA in your area, three letters are available for circulation to: Superintendents, Dance Colleagues, and Members of your state affiliate. Box 254, Northport, NY 11768-0254; 631-757-2700. National Registry of Dance Educators (NRDE)- The NDEO works with the NRDE to offer the Registered Dance Educator (RDE) credential. NDEO regularly provides professional development and resources for Registered Dance Educators to obtain and renew the RDE credential. Professional development covers teaching developmentally-appropriate dance to young children, learning principles of dance science and medicine for safety, establishing ethics in business and practice, and demonstrating leadership in the field.The RDE credential is designed for master teachers and the NRDE provides support and services to RDE members who teach dance in private studios and schools so they, in turn, provide their students and community the highest quality training in dance education. Awards & Scholarships- recognizes individuals outstanding and dance programs in the United States. Awards are given for Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Dance Educator, Vision, Leadership, and to Outstanding Schools and Programs. Graduate students may apply for Student Scholarships that offer assistance to attend national conference. Three categories are available for young professionals depending on their focus: Elsa Posey Award (private schools/studios education); Bill Evans Award (performance education); and Ann Zurilnik (K-12 education). 2007 Awards Guidelines (Lifetime Achievement, Outstanding Dance Educator, Vision, Leadership) 2007 Nomination Form for all Awards Internship Program - NDEO provides students in undergraduate and graduate programs a practical, challenging and meaningful experience in dance education administration and leadership. Young professionals interested in careers in dance education, research, administration, legislature and national advocacy, conference program planning, marketing, technology and publications/CD/video development can receive semester credits while learning through hands-on experiences. NDEO State Affiliates- States that wish to establish a state affiliate of NDEO should download the State Affiliate Guidelines, and call the NDEO office to discuss further. Dues are collected by national office and forwarded to the state at the end of every month with complete e-databases of state members. NDEO sends out monthly renewal notices, monthly acknowledgement letters of membership, and tracks new, renewed, and lapsed members for the state. These services provide infrastructure to states and are welcome by most states. State Affiliates strengthen networks for dance at local, state, and national levels. State Affiliates hold their own state conferences, elect a delegate to represent them on the NDEO Board of Directors, and can establish a state National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA). All national benefits pass on the state affiliate members. Student Chapters- Students may wish to start an NDEO Student Chapter at their college and university. Students Chapters meet at conference, may help universities sponsor state or regional conferences, and elect a delegate to represent them on the NDEO Board of Directors. At national conference, students have special interest area tracks designed to help them prepare for professional employment - develop quality resumes, prepare for job interviews, publish, and present at conferences. Research in Dance Education database (RDEbd)- The RDEdb culminates a four year research project supported by the United States Department of Education (2001-2005). The RDEdb provides comprehensive information on more than 3,300 documents (dissertations, theses, and journal articles) published in dance education (1926 to the present). You may search the database by citation information (author, title, year, location, publication or university); content from 20 US education issues, 14 populations served, and 27 areas of service; research methods and techniques; essential research characteristics, or word searches. Institutional Licenses are available ($350) for three public computers and Libraries can subscribe to the RDEdb ($850) so it is available 24/7 to all students, faculty, and administrators on or off campus. View the grant in .pdf format Centers for Research in Dance Education - The Centers for Research in Dance Education, Temple University and New York University, are built in partnership with the National Dance Education Organization. The centers is established to facilitate research for dancers, researchers, artists and educators teaching in diverse environments- K-12, higher education, professional schools of dance, and community outreach programs. Dancers Forum Compact - The Dancers Forum Compact provides a set of guidelines for reference by dancers and choreographers at any and all stages of their careers. It is meant to facilitate working relationships in an artistic environment and open dialogue for future endeavors. Student Advantage Program - NDEO membership savings for students attending schools who hold membership to NDEO under our Institutional Membership option. Friends of NDEO- NDEO cannot accomplish its many projects and initiatives without public and individual support.
